Happy Spring friends! The first three months of this year have really flown by and I know I have been pretty MIA on here and there’s good reason. I have been so busy with my regular work and being a new mom to Baby D. He is such a great baby and I’m going to post a 6 month update next week. The time has just escaped me and I realized I haven’t written on here in wayyyyy too long. To be honest, I miss it and there is so much great content coming to you soon. Starting off with this delicious orange whiskey smash cocktail that’s just in time for all the spring feels and festivities.

Usually the holiday season is filled with work Christmas parties, family get togethers, and friends wanting to hang out before the craziness of the new year starts! All those gatherings have lots of delicious baked goods that always have some amazing spices in them. It was from those spices that we drew inspiration for this season’s cocktail, the Holiday Ginger Whiskey Flip!
Although rum is an enduring favorite with the offshore fishing community, scotch, bourbon and tequila have also joined the ranks of ultrapremium liquors. So when it’s time to toast your success in the cockpit or in the boardroom, we suggest you reach for one of these top-shelf spirits. Some are best with a splash of water, but most can be enjoyed neat, or with a cube of ice. All things in moderation, of course.

Confession: I’ve grown a bit weary of “flavored” spirits, having been burned by so many bad examples in my college days (whipped cream vodka anyone?).
So, when I first tried Cask & Crew’s small batch flavored whiskies, I didn’t have high expectations. Well, amazing things can happen when we throw our expectations to the wind and approach things with an open mind.
On June 30th, 2018 Cask & Crew Whiskey proudly sponsored the 2018 Whisky Chicks Strut in Germantown, KY. A crew of fifty Whisky Chicks of all different ages, demographics & backgrounds (but with matching Cask & Crew t-shirts!) strutted from location to location to enjoy a signature cocktail and specialty appetizers.
The participating locations were:
Appetizer: Truffle popcorn
Appetizers: Fried green tomatoes, mac & cheese, pretzels & beer cheese and truffle fries
Cocktail: Kentucky Mule or a Highball
Appetizers: Charcuterie boards and veggie trays
The star ingredient today is Cask & Crew Walnut Toffee Whiskey, a lovely balance of buttery sweetness, bitter walnuts and a punch from the whiskey. It’s tasty on its own, with a blend of 51% Canadian rye and 49% American corn, but it’s also great mixed into drinks where the notes of vanilla and spice shine through. For this cocktail, I wanted to heighten the nuttiness of the whiskey with some Amontillado Sherry and round out those spice factors with bitters and sweet vermouth. For an unexpected twist, coconut syrup adds a freshness that lightens the drink a bit. Sipping it from your armchair you experience both the familiar and the exotic.

With this Crew-d Pineapple Sour made with the spicy Cask & Crew Rye Whiskey you can check out of the real world and transport yourself somewhere warm any time. I have had an obsession with Sours since I first learnt how to make them and I love finding new products to use in them. I came across this delicious Rye Whiskey and noticed they had Walnut Toffee and Ginger Spice flavors in their repertoire but found the straight Rye to really work best for this cocktail.
